Is therer a book on how to lead a better more successful life?
Workplay asked:
I really enjoy reading non-fiction, self improvement / personal development style books. So far they have all fallen short of helping me achieve my life goals. Is there a book, workbook or guide that will help me be more charismatic, better looking, more charming, successful in business, happier in life and family? I know your temptation might be to say the bible but I’m looking for something secular. If you have to suggest more than one book please do.

Personal Development & Your Self-improvement!
Has it ever crossed your mind what personal development is exactly? How can it be defined & then implemented in your life? Personal development is basically the continual improvement of ones self over time, by reading, watching and doing certain actions that causes you to improve. Self-improvement books, seminars, tapes and videos are one of the quickest ways to move yourself up the ladder to personal development success. So what is personal development exactly?
Personal development can be difficult to explain if you do not acknowledge your uniqueness first. Believe it or not, you are different from any person who has ever lived, and from any person who is to come. Genetics will tell you that unless you are part of a set of identical siblings, your DNA is different from any DNA that has existed or will ever exist. This should be enough to tell you that you are special!
So, what makes you special? You have a combination of different factors that lend a definition to the real you: your personality is comprised of many past events and experiences both good and bad, the food you like to eat, your reasoning ability, languages you speak, your culture, likes, dislikes, dreams and ambitions all contribute to your overall personality and demeanour. What then, is personal development, and how does all this relate to personal development?
Personal development includes the improvement of your overall ability in everything you do, part of your improvement also means taking stock of your strengths and weaknesses and knowing yourself very well. First, you are a product of your upbringing. Depending on the external environment when you were in the womb, can make a very big impact on your life after you were born and it affects everything in your life. What is personal development? It is complete recognition of all these aspects of your childhood, and acceptance of the fact that such things cannot be changed. If you have learned to improve in the past from harsh teachings and methods, then it’s up to you to not dwell on the past, but rather work out intelligent ways to move on for the better.
What is personal development as it relates to your childhood? It means letting go of the past, because it cannot be changed; it also means anticipating the future, because you can make it better.
Personal development also has some very deep goal setting steps, and working out exactly what your purpose is and what drives you. What do you want to do in the next five years? What do you want to accomplish in the next ten years? What is personal development? It is identifying what you should prioritize in life, and what dreams you should run after. And what is personal development, further? It is the use of your strengths to meet your goals, and the improvement on your weaknesses so that you can be better as a person.
What exactly is personal development? You can answer this question through many methods. You can have a personal development plan, which you can make on your own, or which your psychiatrist or therapist can assist you with. You can also join personal growth and development classes, where you can know yourself better and find ways to improve your life and reach your goals.
What then, is personal development? Personal development is simply knowing yourself completely, from all your strengths and weaknesses, all your dreams and goals, and using all these to fuel your life and lead you to greater heights. With complete personal development, you can be sure of success not only in your career, but in many other important aspects of your life as well.

Excessive Growth a Sign of Acromegaly
Do you sometimes feel like a giant? Better see a doctor. It could be a case of acromegaly!
Acromegaly is a disease caused by an increased secretion of the growth (or somatotropic) hormone. This hormone is produced by the pituitary gland which is located at the base of the brain behind the nasal passages.
The pituitary gland normally controls the production of the growth hormone which is responsible for the person’s transition from a boy to a man. The latter stimulates the growth of muscles and bones in children and adolescents.
In acromegaly, however, there is an excess production of this hormone even after the person has reached his or her full growth. This causes the gradual enlargement of the bones of the hands, feet, jaw and skull.
“Because the bones cease to increase in length after adolescence, acromegaly produces a thickening of the skeleton. The most noticeable change in a person with acromegaly is the exaggerated growth of the forehead and jaw bones, which results in enlarged and coarsened ****** features and widely separated teeth,” according to Dr. David E. Larson, editor-in-chief of the “Mayo Clinic Family Health Book.”
Often the problem is due to an adenoma, a tumor of the anterior (front) lobe of the pituitary gland. This can be removed surgically or subjected to radiation therapy. Drugs like bromocriptine may be used lo lessen the overproduction of the growth hormone but this is usually given in combination with other effective treatments.
Seek medical help immediately if you think you have acromegaly. A positive diagnosis can be made by means of an X-ray examination of the bones of the skull as well as blood and urine tests.
Untreated, the disease will not only distort your features; it can kill you later. Too much growth hormone causes the internal organs to enlarge and this could lead to complications like hypertension, high blood cholesterol levels, heart disease, impotence, diabetes and eye problems.
“Surgical treatment should prevent any worsening of eye complications and stop the progress of the disease. However, the changes in appearance generally are not reversible. The person with acromegaly is also at increased risk for diabetes, and long-term heart, artery and lung disease; thus, sensible, preventive measures (such as not smoking) should be taken lo minimize the risks of these disorders.” Larson said.

What is Yoga? a View at an Ancient Practice
Korbin Newlyn asked:
The question “What is Yoga?” is not the type of question that is answered simply or in depth in such a short space. The practice of yoga has numerous unique schools of thought and varying opinions. In ancient Hinduism, the term “yoga” is more or less a general one, similar to the word “biology” or “physics”.
For the vast majorities of Hindius, the word “yoga” stands for a type of “technology of the spirit” (even though it doesn’t actually translate directly into that), which involves meditation, asceticism. The main goal of “yoga” in this type of circumstance is to get a more beneficial understanding of yourself, of nature, and of the various concepts of existence itself.
Ideas as well as beliefs have been influenced outside of the Indian subcontinent by yoga. Buddism in all of its various forms has been highly shaped by the constructs behind yoga, as has the numerous other asian philosophies and religions. For disciples of other religions, the question of “what is yoga” will be different in a significant way. There are many people who will carry out practices that are highly influenced through the use of yoga without really knowing what it is.
What is Yoga in the Western Environment?
For western culture yoga is a relatively new introduction. It was first introduced in the latter half of the nineteenth century by Swami Vivekananda, an Indian spiritual philosopher and spiritual leader whose speeches on the philosophy behind Indian culture and yoga mesmerized audiences in both the United States as well as the United Kingdom.
He passed away at a relatively young age in his late 30′s, however the seeds of ideas that he planted would later develop into the current day practice of yoga in Western society. The counter-culture of western society that sprung up in the latter half of the twentieth century. It’s assorted interests in many things Eastern furnished the practice of yoga with the drive it required to arise into the prevalent practice in western culture that it is today.
Yoga in the context of western culture affiliated with Hatha Yoga postures or “asanas” as a type of exercise. Even though there are traditionally only 6 styles of orthodox yoga, (Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga) people in western culture have integrated various ideas from these types of schools of thought with each other or even with completely foreign concepts to arrive at other types of styles which might arguably be named “yoga”. Amongst these are “laughing yoga” and “chair yoga”.
In the west yoga is very well liked, particularly in the United State of America. People in America spend in excess of 3 billion dollars each year on classes for yoga as well as associated accessories. Whether or not this Commodification of a ritual that is ancient is helpful or not to the overall practice is debatable; however it does beg more in depth questions on “what is yoga” and what it’s practices stand for.
What is Yoga And How Does It Benefit a Person?
There have been many different benefits that have been shown to the practitioners of yoga. Firstly, the traditional forms of practices pf yoga have shown to enhance strength, flexibility, endurance, as well as general well being and lower the psychological stress and trauma.
Helpful effects on people suffering from asthma as well as individuals with heart conditions who practice yoga breathing techniques have also been demonstrated. There have also been numerous other advantages to using yoga that have been claimed, however unfortunately, not all of them have been proven.

Personal Development – No One Can Stop You
The problems of the world can be eliminated and solved by individual people like you and me, and through no other means than by those people purely concentrating on personal development and personal growth. We need to be able to recognize the essential humanity in ourselves and also in the people we meet.
Every time you open a newspaper or watch TV, listen to the radio or search the internet it’s the same thing nowadays: nothing but a seemingly endless succession of scenes of killing, robbery, rape, bombings, war and nastiness.
It can make you depressed if you let it.
Many commentators talk and write endlessly about the reasons for it all, and especially in the case of wars, governments and leaders of countries spend a lot of effort justifying themselves. It’s funny how they always seem to have some innocent and noble reason for invading a country or bombing the civilian population of that country, isn’t it?
In my opinion there are two major reasons why this situation continues, even though everyone hates it.
The first is a way of thinking that I have named The Badge Mentality. Under this mentality, you gather round and stay with those people who are wearing the same badge as you. Even if you maybe do not like a person very much, he is nevertheless wearing that badge, and it is the same as your badge. Actually, in a way, you do not even have to bother about making a decision as to whether you like him. That really does not matter. And why is that?
Because he is wearing the same badge.
And all those other people, the ones who are wearing different badges? We don’t trust them, of course, and we go ahead and obey our so-called leaders when they order us to kill them.
What form does this badge take? It can be a common nationality or a common language or a common skin color or even a common interest in a particular football team. The reason why there is conflict on Earth is because we have conditioned ourselves to see others as wearers of a badge, and we judge them by that, rather than trying to see each person as an individual human being.
The second reason for the continuation of this situation is if everyone blindly accepts the views and explanations of the political leaders, who are just saying whatever will keep them in office and preserve things as they are. This is why I say that if today everyone on Earth decided to ignore these so-called leaders, and instead, each person concentrated on his or her personal development as a human being, then we would have world peace in a very short time from now.
And yes, I am talking in terms of around next Tuesday.
But, you might say, maybe it is a little bit selfish to be pursuing personal development when there is so much trouble in the world? No because your own personal development is something you can start on right now, right here, today. And if enough people begin on a program of personal development, it will not be long before they develop a force too powerful for mere governments to withstand.
A personal growth revolution can never be imposed from above or from outside. So if it is going to happen, then it is for you to start it rolling, where you are, right now.
Peace is always there to be found within yourself.

How to Guarantee Basketball Growth
One very important aspect about any sport, not just basketball is continual growth and development.
When you are not growing you are doing the opposite… Dying!
Successful basketball players and those who aren’t achieving their dreams are different.
And most of the time it has nothing to do with ability or talent. Ask yourself a simple question?
Do you think there is some baller out there that is way better then some guys in the league, but he is stuck somewhere working at a food restaurant or something?
I know of at least a dozen of them!
But why is this so?
Did they make a bad decision, made a wrong move, or didn’t play their cards right?
All of these could be true, but from what I have found, these are not the main causes. The main cause of basketball failure is a lack of growth!
What kind of growth? Personal growth.
As I stated earlier, if you are not growing, you are doing the opposite of growing.
You see successful, dominate ballers have formed habits of doing things they do not like doing.
Let’s read that again.
You see successful, dominate ballers have formed habits of doing things they do not like doing.
Everyone has the bad habit of being lazy, even successful basketball players. But successful ballers have formed the habit of doing the things that will benefit them even when they are feeling lazy.
Successful ballers focus solely on results, and unsuccessful ballers focus solely on the process of those results.
Here is an example:
A baller who has formed the habit of doing things even when they do not want to, and focuses just on the results will go wake up at 6 in the mourning and work on their game with the intention of playing pro basketball.
The result (playing pro basketball) is the fuel and drive they use to achieve their dreams or goal.
A unsuccessful basketball player will not get up at 6 in the mourning and will look at the process of becoming a pro baller, (competition, chances, odds, how, obstacles, lack of resources, commitment etc…)
And hence they will never get tot their goal, because their goal seems to be a hill they can not climb, it’s too hard, too many things to do.
They actually prevent them selves from achieving their goal!
Here is something that you can do right now and for the rest of your life to ensure basketball growth.
Everyday when you wake up, or even the night before, take out apiece of paper and write down one thing that you do not want to do, but if you did would move your life, and development forward.
Then write down the benefits of completing that task (again focus on the results). By focusing on the result you will take the necessary action to get the job done.
If you were to do this everyday for the rest of your life, your results will be amazing, and you will accomplish some of the biggest goals that you thought were nothing but a dream.
Try this for the next 4 weeks and watch=h as your game, life and everything around it becomes magical!

Branches or Basics of Yoga
merry parker asked:
Ancient practitioners have likened yoga to a living tree with six branches coming from the trunk, with each branch having its own unique function relating to a particular lifestyle. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is one of the six darshanas of Hindu or Vedic schools and, alongside the Bhagvada Gita and Hatha Yoga Pradipika, is a milestone in the history of Yoga. Though brief, the Yoga Sutras are an enormously influential work, just as relevant for yoga philosophy and practice today, as when written many thousands of years ago.
The six branches of Yoga tend to have some aspects in common and familiarizing oneself with all six will certainly help in the selection of your own yoga programme that incorporates routines that appeal from any of the six branches. Asanas or postures, Pranayama or breath control, these two disciplines along with meditation and a strict moral code are the fundamentals of the practice of yoga.
Hatha Yoga
Introduced in the 15th century by an Indian sage as a preparatory stage of physical purification to enable the body to be fit for the practice of higher meditation as in Raja Yoga, Ha means sun and tha means moon, a reference to the energy channels of the body. Fully opened energy channels allow the body to become supple enough to attain the mental disciplines of Raja Yoga. In practice, both Hatha and Raja Yoga are inter-related and dependant upon each other. Western practitioners associate yoga with the hatha branch to attain mental and physical wellbeing.
Raja Yoga
Raja translates as ‘royal’ and meditation is central to this branch of yoga, which has eight side branches or limbs in an order that must be strictly followed. We start with Yama meaning ethical standards, Niyama – self discipline, asana – posture, pranayama – breathing control, pratyahara – sensory withdrawal, dharana – meditation, samadhi – ecstasy or final liberation. Those inclined to introspection or meditation are best suited to Raja yoga.
Though members of religious orders and spiritual communities devote themselves to this yoga branch, one does not have to embrace a monastic lifestyle to gain from the benefits of practicing Raja Yoga.
Karma Yoga
The fundamental principle of Karma Yoga is that what we experience now is created by our past actions, whether in this life or a previous one. Once we understand this principal, then we can ensure all our present actions help create a future free of negativity and selfishness. To practice Karma Yoga is to lead a life of selfless service to others.
Bhakti Yoga
Bhakti Yoga is yoga of the heart, a branch of devotion Bhakti is the Sanskrit term for selfless love of God and mankind. Bhakti principles are universal and common to many world religions. By following the path of bhakti we learn to channel our emotions, accept and have tolerance for all those that cross our path.
Jnana Yoga
This is the branch of knowledge, the yoga of the mind and is both the most difficult and the most direct of the six branches. It is yoga of the mind, of wisdom, the path of the sage or scholar. The practitioners of Jnana Yoga develop their intellects by intensive study, particularly but not confined to, the yoga tradition and other spiritual teachings. This is the path that most appeals to the intellectuals pursuing the practice of yoga. Within the context of our Western religious traditions, Kabalistic scholars, Jesuit priests, and Benedictine monks epitomise Jnana Yogis.
Tantra Yoga
Tantra, from the Sanskrit ‘to weave’ or ‘loom’, is the branch of yoga that practices ritual as a means of experiencing the divine in all our activities. Probably, the most misunderstood or misinterpreted of all the yogas, tantra, the sixth branch, is the pathway of ritual, an in tantric practice; we experience the Divine in everything we do. A reverential attitude is, therefore cultivated, encouraging a ritualistic approach to life. In essence, tantra is the most esoteric of the six major branches and appeals to those yogis who enjoy ceremony and relate to the feminine principle of the cosmos, which they call Shakti.
In the West, the tantric path of yoga has become associated almost entirely with sexual activity. It is because of this emphasis on only one aspect of this branch that it has become misinterpreted and misunderstood by so many. It is amusing to note that, although tantra has become associated exclusively with sexual ritual, most tantric schools actually recommend a celibate lifestyle. The ‘Kama Sutra’ an ancient Hindu book of sexual techniques is the best known example of the lack of understanding of the true objectives of tantra yoga.
A discipline that leads to a reverential attitude to even the most every day celebrations of giving and receiving, of birth and death, of achievements and of failure, and of relationships and understanding, this is a path that will appeal to westerners who enjoy being actively involved in celebrations, church going, clubs and associations and other types of ceremonies.
Combining the Paths
You do not have to limit yourself to one expression, but can practice hatha yoga, taking care of your physical body, while simultaneously cultivating the lifestyle of a Bhakti Yogi, expressing compassion for everyone you meet. Whichever, avenue of yogic expression draws your interest; it will probably be the right yoga path for you.
